The upward side (usually pointing to Christ’s right) symbolizes the penitent thief who was crucified beside Him and entered Paradise.
The downward side (Christ’s left) represents the unrepentant thief, symbolizing rejection of salvation.
So it’s a reminder of judgment, choice, and hope.
